How School Choice Works in Lee County

Lee County does not assign every child to a single neighborhood school the way many Northeast districts do. Instead, families rank the schools they want during open enrollment, and the district assigns seats through a lottery. Students who do not get their first choice are automatically placed on the waitlist for that school.

Starting with the 2026-27 school year, the district uses three choice zones (East, South and West), each divided into subzones 1, 2 and 3. The School Board approved this plan on December 1, 2025. Importantly, the zone plan limits transportation, not choice: the district says the plan “does not limit a student’s access to choose a school for the programs it offers.” If you pick a school outside your subzone, your child can still attend, but you will need to provide transportation. Use the district’s school zones lookup to see which subzone an address falls in before you buy.

How to Enroll If You’re New to Estero

  1. Create a FOCUS Parent Portal account. Enrollment is done online through the district’s FOCUS Parent Portal. You can also book an in-person appointment with the Student Enrollment office at (239) 337-8247.
  2. Gather your documents. Parent photo ID, your child’s birth certificate, the Florida DH680 immunization form, proof of address, a physical exam within the last 12 months (required for kindergarten and for students coming from out of state), custody papers if they apply, transcripts for high school, an IEP if your child has one, and the Home Language Survey.
  3. Rank your school choices. During open enrollment, list your preferred schools. Check the transportation subzone for each one.
  4. Apply separately for specialty programs. Advanced academic, arts and career programs often have their own earlier deadlines and applications.
  5. Accept your placement. Watch your email and the parent portal for your assignment and any waitlist updates.

Tip for buyers from out of state: if you are still under contract or closing when enrollment opens, call the Student Enrollment office and ask which proof-of-address documents it will accept for your situation.

Moving With a Child Who Has an IEP or Gifted Services

If your child has an IEP from another state, federal special education law requires the new district to provide a free appropriate public education, including services comparable to those in the prior IEP, until it completes any evaluation it needs and adopts a new IEP. Bring a complete copy of the current IEP, the most recent evaluation and progress reports to enrollment. For gifted services, bring prior testing and placement records; the district will tell you what documentation it accepts and whether additional screening is required.
