Downtown Bonita Springs is one of Southwest Florida’s best-kept secrets, and it is changing fast. Along the Old 41 Road corridor and the banks of the Imperial River, a small historic town center has turned into a lively district with a live-music venue that draws fans from across the country, Michelin-recognized restaurants, craft breweries, coffee shops in historic houses, a riverfront park with free concerts, and one of Florida’s oldest roadside attractions. Add in the beaches of Bonita Beach and Barefoot Beach a few minutes away, and downtown Bonita makes a perfect day trip, or a perfect place to live.

This guide covers everything visitors want to know about downtown Bonita Springs: where it is, its history, the best places to eat and drink (including Sugarshack Downtown), cafés and sweets, things to do, kayaking the Imperial River, beaches nearby, the events calendar, parking, where to stay and what it is like to live here. We link to each business’s own website where available. Hours and menus change, so check before you go.

Where Is Downtown Bonita Springs?

Downtown Bonita Springs runs along Old 41 Road (Old US-41), roughly from Bonita Beach Road north across the Imperial River. Riverside Park, with its bandshell, historic Liles Hotel and artist cottages, is the heart of the district, and the intersection of Old 41 and Hampton Street is the center of the new restaurant and entertainment scene. Downtown sits between Estero to the north and Naples to the south, just west of Interstate 75 and about 15 minutes from Bonita Beach.

A Short History of Bonita Springs

Surveyors camped along the Imperial River in the 1870s, and the early settlement was simply called “Survey.” It took the name Bonita Springs in the early 1900s, inspired by the natural springs nearby. A road to Fort Myers opened in 1917, and in the late 1920s the railroad and the Tamiami Trail brought new visitors. The Liles Hotel was built in 1926; the city restored it in 2006, and it now houses the Bonita Springs Historical Society’s resource center. In 1936, Bill and Lester Piper opened what became Everglades Wonder Gardens, one of Florida’s earliest roadside attractions.

When US-41 was rerouted away from Old 41 in 1977, downtown traffic disappeared and the district declined for decades. Since about 2019, the City of Bonita Springs has invested heavily in a new Old 41 streetscape with roundabouts, sidewalks, landscaping and parking, and private investors have followed. In late 2025, the city and Barron Collier Companies broke ground on Imperial 41, a mixed-use project with apartments, shops and public riverfront parks expected around 2027. Today, downtown Bonita is one of the most exciting small downtowns in Southwest Florida. Learn more from the Bonita Springs Historical Society.

Sugarshack Downtown: Live Music on Old 41

No downtown Bonita guide is complete without Sugarshack Downtown. Located at 27421 Old 41 Road, across from the Riverside Park bandshell, Sugarshack is a live-music venue and full-service restaurant created by the team behind the Sugarshack music channel on YouTube, which has hundreds of thousands of subscribers. It opened in early 2025 and quickly became the anchor of downtown nightlife.

The menu covers crowd-pleasers like burgers, wings, pizza, fish and grinders served on house-made bread. It is a great stop for lunch, a sunset drink or a full evening of music, and it hosts larger events like a winter block party with multiple stages. Check the Sugarshack website for the current music calendar.

Things to Do in Downtown Bonita Springs

Everglades Wonder Gardens

Everglades Wonder Gardens, at 27180 Old 41 Road, is one of Florida’s oldest roadside attractions, founded in 1936. Today it is a city-owned botanical garden and wildlife sanctuary run by a nonprofit, with flamingos, alligators, rescued birds, turtles and lush tropical gardens on several acres. It is a great family stop and an easy walk from Riverside Park. The gardens are open daily, and parking is free. Check the website for current hours and admission.

Riverside Park

Riverside Park at 10451 Pennsylvania Avenue is downtown Bonita’s living room. It has a bandshell for free concerts, the historic Liles Hotel, artist cottages, a butterfly garden, a veterans memorial and a kayak launch on the Imperial River. The park hosts the Bonita Springs National Art Festival, big band nights, concert band performances, movies in the park and holiday events. See the City of Bonita Springs special events page for the current schedule.

Kayaking and Paddleboarding the Imperial River

The Imperial River is the best way to see “Old Florida” in Bonita Springs. The river winds through cypress, oaks and mangroves on its way to Estero Bay, and paddlers regularly see wading birds, turtles, fish and sometimes manatees. Launch from Riverside Park or nearby Depot Park and paddle upstream (east) for a quiet, shaded trip, or downstream toward Estero Bay for a longer adventure. In season, kayak rentals are available from an outfitter based in the Riverside Park artist cottages. Go early in the morning or late in the afternoon to avoid the midday heat.

Shangri-La Springs

Shangri-La Springs, at 27750 Old 41 Road, is a historic hotel and wellness retreat on more than eight acres, home to the natural spring that gave Bonita Springs its name. The property dates to the 1920s and was renamed Shangri-La in 1963. Today it offers a spa, yoga, a small boutique hotel, organic gardens and the Harvest & Wisdom restaurant. Even if you are not staying, it is worth visiting for brunch and a walk through the grounds.

Boating, Fishing and Dolphin Tours

Rent a boat from Bonita Boat Rentals on Hickory Boulevard and explore the back bays, sandbars and Estero Bay on your own, or book a local captain for a dolphin, sunset or shelling tour. Fishing is excellent year-round, with snook, redfish and trout in the back bays and grouper and snapper offshore. Always check Florida fishing license requirements and local rules before heading out.

Wildlife Watching Tips

Bonita Springs is surrounded by water and wild places, so wildlife is part of everyday life. On the Imperial River, look for great blue herons, snowy egrets, white ibis, anhingas drying their wings and ospreys diving for fish. In the cooler months, West Indian manatees often move into rivers and back bays, and dolphins are common around Estero Bay, Lovers Key and the passes. On the beaches, watch for shorebirds and sea turtle nests. A few local tips:

Downtown Bonita With Kids

Families love downtown Bonita. Start at Everglades Wonder Gardens to see flamingos and alligators up close, then picnic at Riverside Park and watch the kayakers on the Imperial River. Older kids can paddle a short stretch of the river themselves with a parent. In the afternoon, head to the beach for shelling and swimming, then reward everyone with a donut from Trackside or a scoop from Royal Scoop or For Heaven Shakes. Many of the park events, from movie nights to holiday celebrations, are free and family-friendly, and Sugarshack is a casual, welcoming spot for an early dinner with live music.

Living in Downtown Bonita Springs

Downtown Bonita’s revival has made the surrounding neighborhoods increasingly popular with buyers who want walkability, character and quick access to the beach. Near downtown you will find homes along the Imperial River, older Florida cottages, condos and the Bonita Shores neighborhood near the beach. New apartments are coming with Imperial 41. Just south, Bonita Bay is a large gated community with golf, a marina and a private beach park, and communities like VillageWalk of Bonita Springs, Pelican Landing and Spanish Wells offer gated living within a short drive of downtown.

Bonita Bay deserves a closer look for buyers who want a full-amenity lifestyle near downtown. It is a 2,400-acre gated master-planned community off US-41 with about 3,300 homes in more than 50 neighborhoods, ranging from coach homes and villas to single-family homes and high-rise condos. Residents enjoy private golf, a marina, miles of walking and biking paths and a private beach park, with the Promenade at Bonita Bay just outside the gates. Closer to the river, older neighborhoods offer more traditional Florida homes on larger lots, some with water access to the Imperial River and Estero Bay, which appeals to boaters and buyers who want character over HOA amenities. When you buy near downtown, ask about flood zones, elevation, insurance and whether a home has been updated since recent storms; these factors vary widely from street to street.
