Los Angeles and Southwest Florida have more in common than you might think. Both are car-centered, sun-soaked, outdoor-focused places where people spend weekends near the water. But that is where the similarities start to fade. Compared with LA, Estero offers far lighter traffic, much lower housing costs, no state income tax and a slower, community-oriented lifestyle built around golf, pickleball, boating and the Gulf of Mexico.

This guide is written specifically for people leaving Los Angeles, from the Westside and the Valley to Pasadena, the South Bay and Long Beach. It focuses on the day-to-day realities of the move: what your money buys, how traffic and commuting change, which Southwest Florida areas feel like your favorite LA neighborhoods, how the beaches and food compare and what to know about insurance after the 2025 LA wildfires. For a deeper dive on California taxes and residency rules, see our California to Florida guide.

Why Angelenos Are Moving to Southwest Florida

Traffic and Getting Around

Angelenos already live in their cars, so the car-dependent nature of Southwest Florida will not be a shock. What will be different is the experience of driving. Estero’s main roads, including US-41, I-75, Three Oaks Parkway, Ben Hill Griffin Parkway and Corkscrew Road, get busy during the winter tourist season, but there is nothing like the 405 at 5 p.m. Outside of season, most drives are quick and predictable.

Southwest Florida International Airport (RSW) is about 15 minutes from Estero, which is a huge change for anyone used to budgeting an hour or more to reach LAX. Parking is easy, security lines are usually short and the airport is manageable in size. For trips back to LA, United has offered seasonal nonstop service to California, but most flights connect through a hub.

Southwest Florida is not a city in the way LA is. There is no dense urban core with endless neighborhoods. Instead, it is a collection of smaller cities and planned communities, each with its own character. Our Naples vs. Bonita Springs vs. Estero vs. Fort Myers comparison breaks down the differences.

If you are not sure where to start, plan a scouting trip that covers a few areas in two or three days. Spend a morning touring Estero communities along Corkscrew Road, an afternoon on the beaches of Bonita Springs and Naples, and an evening in downtown Naples or the Fort Myers River District. You will quickly get a feel for which lifestyle fits you best.

What Your LA Money Buys in Estero

In much of Los Angeles, $900,000 buys a modest older home or a condo. In Estero, the same budget can buy a newer single-family pool home in a gated community with resort amenities, or a golf course or lakefront home. Here is a general guide:

BudgetWhat You Can Typically Find in Estero
Under $400,000Condos and villas in amenity communities
$400,000 – $600,000Single-family homes in gated communities, many with private pools
$600,000 – $900,000Newer pool homes with lake or golf views and larger floor plans
$900,000 – $1.5 millionPremium golf and lakefront homes, new construction with upgrades
$1.5 million and upLuxury estates, waterfront and high-end country club homes

Be sure to compare the full monthly cost, not just the price. Florida homeowners pay HOA dues, property taxes, insurance and sometimes CDD assessments and flood insurance. A newer home with impact windows and a newer roof will usually cost less to insure. Estero’s homes were taking about 78 days to sell in mid-2026, which gives buyers time to negotiate.

Insurance After the LA Fires

For many LA homeowners, the January 2025 wildfires changed how they think about risk and insurance. Insurers have pulled back from parts of California, and many homeowners have been pushed onto the FAIR Plan. Florida has had its own insurance challenges, but reforms in recent years have brought more companies back into the market, and rates have started to stabilize.

Beaches: Pacific vs. Gulf

If you are used to LA beaches, the Gulf Coast will feel very different. The Pacific is cool, with waves, surfers and dramatic cliffs. The Gulf of Mexico is warm, often above 80°F in summer, with calm, clear water most of the year. Instead of surfing, Southwest Florida beach days are about swimming, paddleboarding, kayaking, shelling and watching dolphins.

One thing every Angeleno loves: sunsets over the water every night. Because the Gulf Coast faces west, you get the same Pacific-style sunsets you are used to, just with warmer water.

Food, Culture and Entertainment

Los Angeles has one of the best food scenes in the world, and it is honest to say that Southwest Florida cannot match its depth and variety, especially for Mexican, Korean, Thai and other international cuisines. What Southwest Florida does well is fresh Gulf seafood, Italian, Cuban and Latin American food, steakhouses, waterfront dining and a growing number of chef-driven restaurants in Naples and Fort Myers.

For entertainment, Naples offers Artis—Naples with the Naples Philharmonic, galleries and theater. Hertz Arena in Estero hosts Florida Everblades hockey and concerts. Spring training brings the Boston Red Sox and Minnesota Twins to Fort Myers every February and March. Big concerts and major-league games are a drive away in Tampa, Orlando or Miami. If you work in entertainment, many people keep their LA work remote and fly back as needed.

Working Remotely from Estero on LA Time

Many LA transplants work remotely for entertainment, tech, marketing, legal and finance companies. The three-hour time difference can work in your favor: you can start your day early, handle personal errands or a workout in the morning, and still be online for the West Coast afternoon. Just remember that a 5 p.m. Pacific call is 8 p.m. in Estero. Check internet options at any home you are considering, since providers vary by community.

Climate: Dry Heat vs. Florida Humidity

LA’s climate is famously dry and mild. Southwest Florida is warm all year, but humidity is the big adjustment. Winters are spectacular, with average January highs around 75°F and plenty of sunshine. From June through September, highs average in the low 90s and afternoon thunderstorms are common. The area receives about 57 inches of rain a year, mostly in summer. Many LA transplants say the winters make the summers worth it, and most adapt by scheduling outdoor time in the morning and evening.

Selling Your Los Angeles Home

For many Angelenos, selling the LA house is what makes the move possible. A few things to plan for:

Outdoor Life: From Canyons to Preserves

LA’s hiking culture revolves around canyons, mountains and coastal bluffs. Southwest Florida is flat, so outdoor life looks different. Instead of Runyon Canyon, think boardwalk trails through cypress swamps at Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary, kayaking the Estero River through mangroves, biking flat paths and paddleboarding on calm bays. Wildlife is the big draw: dolphins, manatees, roseate spoonbills, ospreys and alligators are part of everyday life. Our Estero activities guide covers parks, paddling and recreation close to home.

Earthquake Kits to Hurricane Kits

Angelenos already know how to prepare for disasters. The difference is timing. Earthquakes and wildfires can strike with little warning, while hurricanes are forecast days in advance. In Southwest Florida, preparation focuses on the June through November hurricane season: protecting windows, securing outdoor furniture, keeping supplies on hand, knowing your evacuation zone and having a plan for your pets and important documents. Newer homes with impact windows and generators make storm season much less stressful. Sign up for Lee County’s AlertLee notifications as soon as you move.

Sports Fans from LA

You will not find the Lakers, Dodgers or Rams in Southwest Florida, but there is plenty to watch. Spring training in Fort Myers brings the Red Sox and Twins every February and March, with affordable tickets and up-close seats. The Florida Everblades, one of the most successful minor league hockey teams in the country, play at Hertz Arena in Estero. FGCU basketball is fun and affordable. For big-league games, Tampa is about two hours north. And with plenty of sports bars around town, finding a place to watch your LA teams is easy, though West Coast night games start late on Eastern time.

Healthcare in Southwest Florida

Lee Health is the area’s largest healthcare system, with Lee Health Coconut Point in Estero offering outpatient services and a freestanding emergency department. Major hospitals are in Fort Myers, and Naples is served by the NCH system. Many practices get busy during the winter season, so set up primary care and any specialists soon after you move, and transfer your records from your LA providers.

A Week in Estero for a Former Angeleno

What does life actually look like after the move? Here is a typical week for many LA transplants living in Estero during the winter season:

Notice what is missing: hours in the car. That extra time is what many LA transplants say they value most.

Taxes in Brief

Leaving Los Angeles means leaving California’s income tax, which reaches 13.3% at the top, and State Disability Insurance at 1.3% of wages in 2026 with no wage cap. Florida has no state income tax. Sales tax drops from around 9.5% or more in most of LA County to 6.5% in Estero. Property taxes work differently: California’s Prop 13 limits increases for long-time owners, while Florida offers a homestead exemption and a 3% cap for primary residences. California also has strict residency rules, so plan your move date and any large income events with a CPA. Our California to Florida guide covers this in detail.
